About Henry Campbell Black
Henry Black was born in Ossining, NY in 1860 and was the author of Black’s Law Dictionary, the most well-known legal reference in the United States. He was editor of the Constitutional Review from 1917 until his death. A vehement supporter of the Constitution, Mr. Black helped found the National Association for Constitutional Government in 1914. When writing his famous legal reference, his goal was to create the first comprehensive legal dictionary and it it soon became just that, quickly eclipsing the previous standard, Bouvier’s legal dictionary.
About the Dictionary
Black’s Law Dictionary is the most circulated legal reference book in the United States. It has gone through several editions since its first publication in 1891 but it has remained a critical reference since shortly after it was first published. It was originally written by Henry Campbell Black. The book is currently in the 8th edition. Only the 2nd edition can be found online (See the Link Below) for free because it is now in the public domain. The dictionary itself covers everything from common legal terms to important Supreme Court cases. It has been translated into a number of foreign languages.

Hi there may I use some of the information here in this post if I provide a link back to your site?
To Whom It May Concern:
Thank you for providing access to information which is normally difficult to find or to afford. I appreciate the way the 2nd Edition of Black’s Law is presented as archived material which was scanned and then made available in its original condition and format. It is important, in may opinion, to consider both the history of legal terms and law in America, as well as how it is interpreted today.
Ultimately, in the practice of law, the words you choose determine how well you are able to express your interpretation of the law. In addition, words inherently have subtle meanings which may easily be interpreted in numerous ways. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to provide a tool which everyone can access and reference, which is generally agreed upon, to better understand and express their uunderstanding of laws and how legal issues should be addressed.
Thank you,
Bayo Cary
